US B2 Visa Interview:
30 Real Questions With Model Answers

2025 Gujarat Applicant Guide — written by a licensed US immigration attorney who has reviewed hundreds of B2 rejections from Indian applicants.

The US B2 visitor visa interview lasts 3 to 5 minutes. In that time, a consular officer will decide whether you come to America — or go home empty-handed. For applicants from Gujarat, this brief conversation is often the single point of failure in an otherwise strong application.

I am a licensed US immigration attorney. I have reviewed hundreds of B2 visa rejections from Indian applicants and I can tell you this: most rejections are not caused by bad documents. They are caused by unprepared answers that fail to overcome the legal presumption under Section 214(b) — that every applicant intends to immigrate permanently.

This guide gives you the 30 most common B2 visa interview questions, model answers tailored for Gujarat applicants, and the attorney-level thinking behind each one. Read this before your interview date.

⚖️

What the Officer Is Actually Trying to Find Out

Every question in a B2 interview — regardless of how it is phrased — is designed to answer one legal question: will this person return to India after their visit?

Under Section 214(b) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act, you are presumed to be an intending immigrant until you prove otherwise. The officer is not looking for a reason to approve you — they are looking for a reason not to reject you.

What They AssessWhat They Are Looking For
Non-immigrant intentClear, temporary purpose — a specific reason to visit and a definite return date
Ties to IndiaJob, business, property, family dependents — strong reasons you MUST come back
Financial abilityCan you fund this trip legitimately, without working illegally in the US?
ConsistencyDo your DS-160 answers, documents, and spoken answers all match perfectly?
⚖️

Attorney tip: The officer decides in the first 60 seconds. Your opening answer — to "What is the purpose of your visit?" — sets the tone for the entire interview. Be specific, be brief, and be confident. "Tourism" alone is a weak answer. "I am visiting New York and Washington DC for 12 days to see family and tourist attractions, and I return on March 15th" is a strong answer.

1

Purpose of Visit — Questions 1–6

These are always the opening questions. Officers use them to establish the baseline purpose and test whether your story is rehearsed or genuine.

Q1

What is the purpose of your visit to the United States?

Model Answer

I am visiting the United States for tourism. I plan to spend 14 days visiting New York City, Washington DC, and Niagara Falls. I have a return ticket booked for [date].

Why this works: It is specific — cities, duration, return date. It does not just say "tourism." Officers hear vague answers hundreds of times a day; specificity signals genuine intent.

Avoid

"Sightseeing."  ·  "I want to see America."  ·  "My son is there." Any answer that forces three follow-up questions to understand the basics.

Q2

How long do you plan to stay?

Model Answer

14 days — I arrive on [date] and my return flight is on [date]. I have my ticket with me.

Always have a specific number of days ready. Vague answers like "maybe 2–3 weeks" signal you have not planned properly — or worse, that you are not sure you want to come back.

Q3

Where will you stay in the US?

Model Answer — Hotel

I have a hotel reservation in New York — the [hotel name] in Manhattan — and an Airbnb in Washington DC. I have both confirmations.

Model Answer — Staying With Family

I will stay with my son who lives in [city, state]. His address is [address]. I have an invitation letter from him.

Attorney note: If staying with family, bring their full US address, proof of their status (copy of green card or visa), and an invitation letter on plain paper. Officers sometimes verify this.

Q4

Who is paying for your trip?

Model Answer — Self-Sponsored

I am paying for the trip myself. I have savings and a fixed deposit that covers the expenses. I have my bank statements here.

Model Answer — Sponsored by Family

My son is sponsoring the trip. He has sent me a sponsorship letter and his last three months' pay stubs. I also have my own savings.

Important: If someone else is sponsoring, having some of your own money still matters. Full dependence on a sponsor can raise questions about your economic standing.

Q5

Have you been to the US before?

Model Answer — First Time

No, this is my first visit to the United States. I have travelled to [Dubai / Singapore / UK] before — I have those stamps in my passport.

Model Answer — Have Visited Before

Yes, I visited in [year] for [purpose] and I returned on time. My previous visa is in this passport.

Why prior travel helps: Travel history to any country — especially if you always returned on time — is a very strong trust signal. Mention it proactively.

Q6

What places do you plan to visit?

Model Answer

I plan to visit the Statue of Liberty and Times Square in New York, the Smithsonian museums and the Capitol in Washington DC, and Niagara Falls. I have a rough day-by-day itinerary.

⚖️

Tip: Bring a printed itinerary. It takes 30 minutes to create and removes doubt about whether this is a genuine tourist visit. Officers notice when applicants cannot name a single landmark in the city they are supposedly visiting.

2

Ties to India — Questions 7–14 Most Critical Category

This is where most Gujarat applicants fail. A strong bank balance does not replace strong ties to India. The officer needs to believe you have a life here that you will return to.

Q7

What do you do for work in India?

Model Answer — Employed

I work as a [designation] at [company name] in Ahmedabad. I have been with the company for [X] years. I have a leave approval letter from my employer for the dates I will be away.

Model Answer — Self-Employed / Business Owner

I run a [type of business] in Ahmedabad — it has been operating for [X] years and employs [X] people. I have my GST certificate and business registration with me.

Model Answer — Retired

I am retired. I worked as [profession] for [X] years. I have a pension from [organisation] and fixed deposits that support me.

⚖️

Attorney tip for Gujarat business owners — diamond traders, textile business owners, manufacturers — often struggle here because they do not bring adequate business proof. Bring: GST registration, 2 years of ITR, business account statements, and a trade licence.

Q8

Who is dependent on you in India?

Model Answer

My wife and two children live with me in Ahmedabad. My children are in school — I have their school enrollment letters. I also care for my elderly mother who lives with us.

Why this matters: Dependents who stay in India are among the strongest ties you can demonstrate. An officer who knows your spouse and minor children are in India has far less reason to fear you will overstay.

Q9

Do you own property in India?

Model Answer — Property Owner

Yes, I own a residential flat in Ahmedabad — purchased in [year]. I also have agricultural land in [village] that has been in our family for generations. I have the property registration documents.

Model Answer — Renting

I rent an apartment in Ahmedabad and have done so for [X] years. I have my lease agreement and utility bills.

Q10

What is your monthly income / salary?

Model Answer — Salaried

My monthly salary is approximately ₹[X] — around $[X] — after tax. I have my last 3 months' payslips and my ITR for the last 2 years.

Model Answer — Business Owner

My business generates approximately ₹[X] per month in net profit. I have my ITR showing income for the last 2 years and my business bank account statements.

Q11

Why will you return to India after your visit?

Model Answer

I have my job here — I have already been granted leave only for these 14 days and I am expected back on [date]. My wife and children are here. My business is here. I have built everything here — I have no reason to stay illegally.

⚠️

This is the most important question. Answer it with multiple ties, not just one. A single reason (only employment, or only family) is weaker than listing three or four genuine, specific reasons.

Q12

Do you have family members already in the US?

Model Answer — Yes

Yes, my son [name] lives in [city, state] on an H-1B work visa. I am visiting him as part of my trip, and I also plan to see some tourist sites.

Model Answer — No

No immediate family, but I have a distant cousin in [city]. I am visiting as a tourist, not to stay with anyone.

⚠️

Caution: If family in the US is your ONLY reason for the trip, officers will probe harder on your return intent. Balance family visit with a clear tourist itinerary.

Q13

What does your spouse do? Are they travelling with you?

Model Answer — Travelling Together

Yes, my wife is applying together with me. She works as [profession] in Ahmedabad.

Model Answer — Spouse Staying in India

My wife is not travelling — she has her job here and our children are in school. She is an important reason I will return on time.

Q14

Have you ever applied to immigrate to the US or any other country?

Model Answer — No

No, I have never applied for an immigrant visa or permanent residency in any country. I am completely satisfied living and working in India.

Model Answer — Yes

I did apply for [Canada PR / Australia skilled migration] in [year], but I withdrew the application because [genuine reason — family situation changed, business required me to stay, etc.].

⚠️

Be truthful: Consulates can see prior applications. Lying about this can result in a permanent bar for misrepresentation under Section 212(a)(6)(C). Always be honest.

3

Financial Questions — Questions 15–19

Q15

How much will this trip cost and how are you funding it?

Model Answer

The total trip cost is approximately ₹2.5 lakhs including flights, hotels, and daily expenses. I am funding it from my savings account — I have a fixed deposit of ₹[X] and savings of ₹[X]. I have my bank statements.

Q16

Show me your bank statements. Why is there a large deposit on [date]?

Model Answer — Property Sale Proceeds

That is the sale proceeds from a property I sold in [month]. I have the sale deed and registration document as supporting proof.

Model Answer — FD Maturity

That is a fixed deposit that matured — I have the FD receipt showing it was opened in [year].

⚠️

Critical attorney warning: Never move money into your account specifically to inflate the balance before applying. Officers are trained to spot sudden large deposits with no explanation. If you have a legitimate reason for a deposit, bring the supporting document. Authentic, consistent financial history is worth more than a temporarily inflated balance.

Q17

Do you have a credit card?

Model Answer

Yes, I have a [bank name] credit card with a limit of ₹[X]. I also use it internationally — I have activated it for international transactions.

Note: A credit card is a supporting document, not a major one. It shows access to funds. Do not over-rely on it if your savings are thin.

Q18

Is anyone else sponsoring your trip?

Model Answer

My son in the US is partially contributing — he has sent a sponsorship letter and his recent pay stubs. I also have my own savings that cover a portion.

Q19

Why are you spending so much / so little on this trip?

Model Answer

The trip cost is [X]% of my monthly income, which I have saved for over [X] months. This is a once-in-a-few-years trip for me — not a regular expense.

Proportionality matters: Officers look at whether the trip is realistic given your income. Show the savings, not just the balance.

4

Questions for Specific Applicant Types — Questions 20–24

👴 Senior Citizens / Parents Visiting Adult Children
Q20

Why is your child not coming to India to visit you instead?

Model Answer

My son has very limited leave from his employer in the US and cannot take 10–14 days off. It is easier for me to travel since I am retired and have the flexibility. I also genuinely want to see America.

Q21

What will you do if you fall ill in America? Do you have medical insurance?

Model Answer

I have taken comprehensive international travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, hospitalisation, and emergency evacuation. The coverage is $100,000. I have the policy document.

⚖️

Always buy travel insurance before the interview. It costs ₹3,000–8,000 for a 2-week trip and removes a significant concern officers have about elderly visitors. Bring the printed policy document.

💼 Self-Employed Applicants & Business Owners
Q22

Who will run your business while you are away?

Model Answer

I have a manager — [name] — who handles day-to-day operations in my absence. I have given limited power of attorney to him for the duration of the trip. I remain reachable by phone and email for major decisions.

Q23

What is your business turnover / GST registration?

Model Answer

My business has an annual turnover of approximately ₹[X]. I am GST-registered — registration number [GSTIN]. I have my last 2 years' ITR and business account statements showing consistent revenue.

❌ Previously Rejected Applicants
Q24

You were rejected before. What has changed?

Model Answer

I was rejected in [year] under Section 214(b). At that time, I had just started my business and my financial records were not strong. In the past 2 years, I have established a solid business with a turnover of ₹[X], purchased a property, and my children are now in school — all of which are documented here. My ties to India are now significantly stronger.

Be direct and specific. Name the exact reason for the previous rejection and explain precisely what is different now. A vague "things are better now" answer will not work. See our full guide: US Visa Rejected — What to Do Next →

5

Closing Consistency Questions — Questions 25–30

Officers use these to test whether your answers match your DS-160 and documents. Inconsistency here — even small — is a red flag.

Q25

When did you apply for this visa? Why did it take so long?

Model Answer

I applied [X] months ago — I had to wait for the appointment slot. I booked a refundable hotel and flexible flights to accommodate the wait.

Q26

Is this the first time you are applying?

Model Answer — First Time

Yes, this is my first US visa application.

Model Answer — Not First Time

No, I applied once before in [year]. I was rejected under [section]. I have since [what changed] and I believe my application is much stronger now.

Q27

What is your education background?

Model Answer

I completed my [degree] from [university] in [year]. I now work as [profession] / run a [type of business].

Q28

Have you ever overstayed a visa in any country?

Model Answer — No (Ideal)

No, I have never overstayed in any country. I always leave before my visa expires.

⚠️

If yes — be honest. A previous overstay is a serious issue. Do not hide it — consulates can verify this. Disclose it and explain the circumstances. EZVZA strongly recommends an attorney consultation before applying in this case.

Q29

Do you have any relatives who have immigrant status or US citizenship?

Model Answer

My [relation] is a US citizen / permanent resident. I am visiting them as a tourist. I have no intention of applying for any immigrant benefit through them.

Q30

Why do you want to visit America specifically?

Model Answer

The United States has places I have always wanted to see — the scale of New York City, the history in Washington DC, the natural beauty of Niagara Falls. I have been planning this trip for some time and saved for it accordingly.

⚖️

Tip: This sounds like a soft question but officers sometimes ask it to catch people who say "my son is there" when the DS-160 says "tourism." Make sure your answer matches your stated purpose exactly.

Required at entry — bring a printed copy, not just the digital version.

Entry to the consulate — do not forget this.

⚠️ Avoid These

5 Things That Will Get You Rejected — And How to Avoid Them

Rejection Trigger 1

Weak or inconsistent ties to India

Single, unmarried applicants with no property and no dependents face the highest 214(b) rejection rates. If this is you, you need a particularly strong employment letter, evidence of ongoing business obligations, and a clear, specific itinerary showing a genuine short-trip purpose.

Rejection Trigger 2

Answers that contradict the DS-160

If your DS-160 says "tourism" but you tell the officer "I am going to attend my nephew's wedding," that is an inconsistency. Officers flag this immediately. Every spoken answer must match your application form exactly.

Rejection Trigger 3

Unable to explain a large bank deposit

Sudden large deposits with no documentation — sale of jewellery, transfer from a relative, borrowed funds — are a major red flag. If your bank statement has an unusual transaction, have the supporting document ready before the interview.

Rejection Trigger 4

Vague, rehearsed-sounding answers

Officers interview hundreds of applicants a day. They recognise memorised script answers instantly. Speak naturally, answer specifically, and don't volunteer information that was not asked for. Know the content — don't recite it.

Rejection Trigger 5

No clear itinerary — "I'll decide when I get there"

Saying "I will decide when I get there" tells the officer two things: you have not planned a real trip, and you are not sure how long you will stay. Bring a basic day-by-day plan even if it is not set in stone.

❓ Common Questions

B2 Visa Interview — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common reason for B2 visa rejection in India?

+

Section 214(b) — failure to establish sufficient ties to India. Officers must be convinced you will return after your visit. This accounts for approximately 65% of B1/B2 rejections from Indian applicants. EZVZA's US immigration attorney helps Gujarat applicants build the right documentation and interview strategy to overcome this specific ground.

What documents do I need for a US B2 visa interview?

+

Core documents: valid passport + old passports, DS-160 confirmation, return ticket, hotel bookings, 6-month bank statements, ITR (2 years), employment letter, and travel insurance. For self-employed applicants: also bring GST registration, trade licence, business bank statements, and CA-certified accounts. Property documents strengthen any application significantly.

Can I reapply for a B2 visa after rejection?

+

Yes. There is no mandatory waiting period. However, reapplying without changing your documentation or interview approach rarely succeeds. The consulate sees your full application history. EZVZA's attorneys have revived 90%+ of rejected B2 cases from Gujarat — because we address the actual legal issue, not just the surface documents. Read our full rejection revival guide →

How long is the B2 visa interview?

+

Typically 3 to 5 minutes. At busy consulates like Hyderabad and Mumbai, some interviews are even shorter. The officer often makes a decision in the first 60 seconds based on your opening answer and demeanour. This is why preparation — specifically for your first answer — is so critical.

Is a high bank balance enough to get a B2 visa approved?

+

No — and many Gujarat applicants make exactly this mistake. Officers want to see consistent income history over 6–12 months, not a single large balance. A sudden large deposit before applying is often a red flag. Strong ties to India (employment, property, family) matter more than a high balance alone.

Do I need to carry original documents or copies?

+

Bring originals of all key documents along with one set of self-attested photocopies. The officer at the window may not accept originals — they will typically scan or review copies. Having both ready ensures you are not caught off guard. Organise them in the order you are likely to be asked about them.
