Which Country's Embassy Do You Apply Through?

This is the most common question. The rule is: if visiting one country only, apply to that country's embassy. If visiting multiple countries, apply to the embassy of the country where you will spend the most nights. If spending equal nights in multiple countries, apply through the country of your first entry.

Travel Insurance — What to Buy

Every Schengen application requires travel insurance with minimum €30,000 medical coverage, valid across all 26 Schengen countries.

Insurance GuidanceRecommended insurers for Indian travellers: Bajaj Allianz, TATA AIG, HDFC Ergo, and Star Health all offer Schengen-compliant policies. Cost is approximately ₹1,500–3,500 for a 2-week trip. Buy the insurance after your appointment is booked but before submission.

5 Reasons Schengen Visas Are Rejected for Indian Applicants

1. Insufficient financial proof. Bank balance must look stable and consistent — not inflated 2 weeks before application. Show 3–6 months of statements.
2. Incomplete or inconsistent itinerary. Your booked hotels must match the countries on your application. Staying 7 nights in Paris but applying through the German embassy for one day there creates inconsistency.
3. Travel insurance not Schengen-compliant. Must specify 'Schengen area' coverage, minimum €30,000, covering the exact dates of your trip.
4. Weak ties to India. Especially for single young applicants — officers need to believe you will return. Employment letter with approved leave, property documents, or family responsibilities help enormously.
5. No prior travel history. First-time international travellers face higher scrutiny. If you have never travelled outside India, start with a simpler destination (Dubai, Singapore, Thailand) to build your travel history before applying for Schengen.
