One of the most emotional visa applications our team handles is parents visiting their children in America. You have built a life in the USA. Your parents are in Ahmedabad, Surat, or Vadodara. You want them to visit — to meet your children, to see where you live, to share celebrations.

The B2 visitor visa for parents is entirely achievable — but it requires careful preparation, the right documents, and an understanding of what consular officers are looking for when they see an elderly Indian applicant sitting across the window.

What Officers Look For — The Two Key Questions

What the Officer AsksWhat It Means for Your Parents
Will they return to India?Do they have strong reasons to come home — property, medical care, other children, grandchildren in India, pension, community?
Is this a genuine temporary visit? Is there a clear, specific purpose — visiting their child for X weeks — with a definite return date?

Documents Your Parents Need in India

Identity and Application Documents

  • Valid passport — must have at least 6 months validity beyond the planned visit date
  • Previous passports — all old passports showing travel history and any prior US visas
  • DS-160 form — completed online, one per applicant
  • Visa fee receipt — $185 per person (MRV fee) paid online before interview
  • Appointment confirmation — for OFC (biometrics) and interview

Financial Documents — Your Parents' Own Funds

Even though you are sponsoring the trip, your parents should show their own financial standing. Officers want to see that they have an established, stable life in India.

  • Bank statements — 6 months showing pension deposits, FD interest, rental income — regular, consistent amounts
  • Fixed deposit certificates — strong indicator of financial stability
  • Pension documentation — government or employer pension letter confirming monthly amount
  • Property documents — if they own property in India, sale deed or property tax receipt
  • ITR — last 2 years (if applicable, for business or rental income)

Your Documents as the US-Based Sponsor

DocumentNotes
Sponsorship / invitation letterOn plain paper — your name, US address, relationship, dates of visit, statement you will cover all expenses
Your most recent pay stubs — 3 monthsShows you can financially support the visit
Your US bank statement — 3 monthsConsistent income and savings
Copy of your US visa or green cardFront and back — proves your legal status in the US
Proof of your US addressUtility bill or lease agreement with your name and US address
Evidence of relationshipYour birth certificate — establishes the parent-child relationship officially
Attorney Tip — Sponsorship LetterThe sponsorship letter should be on plain paper (not notarised, not on legal letterhead). Include specific dates (approximate is fine), a statement that you will cover all costs including airfare, accommodation, meals, and medical expenses, and a confirmation that your parents will return to India by the planned date. Do NOT say 'they will stay as long as they want' — this suggests indefinite stay.

Interview Tips for Senior Citizen B2 Applicants

The interview is typically 2–3 minutes for parents visiting children. Officers are generally respectful, but they are watching for red flags.

  • Prepare for Gujarati/Hindi interviews — most Indian consulates allow interviews in Hindi or regional languages
  • Simple, direct answers: 'I am visiting my son in New Jersey for 2 months. He has a good job there. I will come back because my home and other children are here.'
  • Know the basics: your child's full name, their city and state in the US, approximate duration of stay, return date
  • Buy travel insurance before the interview — it removes a major concern about elderly visitors and shows preparation
  • Mention their life in India: property, other children, grandchildren who are still in India, medical care they receive here
Prior 214(b) RejectionPrior rejection is not the end. At EZVZA, our US immigration attorney reviews the refusal letter and identifies the exact legal ground. For parents with prior 214(b) rejections, the most common improvements are stronger ties documentation, a clearer visit purpose, and better financial documentation for both the parents and the sponsor.

Common Mistakes on Parents' B2 Visa Applications

Vague visit purpose. 'My parents want to visit America' is not enough. State specific events, duration, and planned activities. 'My mother is visiting to see her grandchildren for 8 weeks during their school summer break.'
No evidence of ties to India. Officers worry elderly parents will overstay. Property documents, pension letters, FD certificates, and other children/grandchildren in India are all evidence of ties.
Sponsorship letter too generic or too long. Keep it specific and factual — 1 page maximum. Include dates, relationship, and financial undertaking. Do not include immigration-related language or green card references.
