This guide explains exactly how to apply for a Canada study permit from India in 2025: who qualifies, what documents are needed, how the finances work, and what IRCC is looking for after the policy change.

Statement of Purpose — What IRCC Wants to See

The SOP is not just a formality. IRCC officers read it to assess whether your study plan makes sense and whether you genuinely intend to return to India after graduation.

  • Why Canada: Specific — not generic. Name the institution, programme, faculty, or research opportunity.
  • Why this specific institution: Ranking, specific professors, co-op programme, industry connections.
  • Your academic/professional background: How your previous education leads naturally to this programme.
  • Post-graduation plans in India: Name a specific career path, family business, or industry where your Canadian qualification will be valuable.
IRCC Red FlagIf your SOP says "I will explore opportunities after graduation," IRCC may question your intent to return. Be specific: "I plan to return to India and join my family's textile export business in Surat."

Common Mistakes on Canada Study Permit Applications

Vague post-study plans. Officers are specifically assessing whether you intend to return to India. Generic statements about "exploring opportunities" are a red flag.
Insufficient financial proof. CAD $20,635 is significantly higher than the previous requirement. Many applicants still budget based on the old $10,000 figure.
Missing Province Attestation Letter (PAL). Required since March 2024 — applications submitted without the PAL will be returned.
Not disclosing prior refusals. All prior visa refusals to any country must be disclosed on the IMM 1294. Non-disclosure is treated as misrepresentation.
